This shopping center was built in 1820 as Passer Baru in Jakarta Batavia. Those who shopped at Passer Baru were the Dutch lived in Rijswijk (now Jalan Veteran). The shops in Passer Baru built with Chinese and European styles.
Under the old shops that still exist is Apotek Kimia Farma, Ie Seng Lee stores, Jasmin furniture stores, Watches Shop Tjung Tjung, Seis optic store (Tjun Lie). Suits tailor has since are Isardas, Hariom and Gehimal and women shopped at Lilaram and Bombay. Big business used to move between the shops and stores are Europa and de Zon. Matahari Putra Prima retailers locating in New Market in 1958. At the northern end of New Market Road was once a comic books merchant center. Cinema that has ever existed in the new market are, the Globe Theatre, the Capitol Theatre and the Astoria Cinema (cinema Satria) in water port. Passer Baru is the birthplace of the dinner Bakmi Gang Kelinci. This restaurant start its bussiness in 1957 as a noodle cart dealer on the Pintu Besi street , in front of Globe Cinema.
Mostly people live in Passer Baru are Indian and Indonesian. People from India and Indonesia, trading on textiles, sporting goods, shoes, adult dvd, and many daily needs. Registered in 2002, about 2,000 Indian families than urban residents, and most of them live in urban centers, particularly around Passer Baru and Pintu Air. In the Passer Baru also has a place of worship of India-Indonesian community.
